Woot, two in a day!

Are you lucky, huh?

I am unwinding from the day, Derek is asleep.
While I was feeding him lunch the doorbell rang, and it was the postman holding my envelope with Holistic Moms flyers…with no stamps on it! Der! He didn’t even tell me what was wrong, I saw it immediately and scuttled off to get stamps. I am glad I was there to answer the door, 20 minutes earlier and I would have been napping along with Derek!

Our pediatrician said he’d put them out in the waiting room and already agreed to come as a speaker for us at our meetings, whatever topic we think would be suited. He also gave me a midwife and and a naturopath as connections to approach to be speakers as well. And hopefully we will have a yoga practitioner as well one time, who teaches prenatal and post natal yoga. So that is a good base to start from in terms of finding folks to come talk at meetings! I am glad to be starting this branch with a co-leader, it makes the work a lot more managed and less daunting.

Today was chilly, the first chilly day so far since summer began, if you don’t count our days at the coast. I just got some new pants and it was a good day to try them out, not a day for shorts! I haven’t bought much new clothing since Derek was born, these were a size smaller than what I was right before I got pregnant and fit with a lot of room, without being too big. I hope to go shopping for clothes in the next week or two, and it’s good to maybe know where to start in terms of sizing. I wish I liked clothes shopping, but I don’t, so I hope to find some things within a decent amount of time before I feel like fleeing the stores. I wasn’t born with that particular gene that seems to settle into the female of the species more often than not.

I am clearly missing touring and the world of Dolby. I keep having touring dreams, that are almost as busy and stressy as the real days on the road could be, but I am always so happy in the dreams to be back in that world. Someday, someday….He’s working hard on his new album and I am really jazzed for him. I miss him, he has been away from the U.S. for over a year now, and after weeks together on the road, it’s so different to have him so far away. At least I know as long as he is there and we are here, when we are ready to check out England, we have at least one place to call home! And since I know Google will pick this up on the Thomas Dolby alert: Hi Thomas! I miss you! And I got those shirts out to the rightful owners! =P

I did not get back in the studio today to start hammering my silver, maybe tomorrow. I always have things I don’t get to that I want, but if I finish most of my goals, it’s a banner day.
Ok, the belly is full of risotto and it’s time for a quick, hot shower and then snuggle into bed with a good book.

Time is flying, summer is almost over, today it feels like it already is! Derek is asleep in flannel pants, and I am jealous.

But I got some metalsmithing done, sent out some flyers to my pediatrician about the new Holistic Moms group, Portland Branch, that I have helped cofound with a friend. Our first meeting, a free Open House, is Oct. 2 at the Community Center in Beaverton. I hope people show up, but I know new groups can be slow to grow.

I am going to go lay down and rest a bit till the Derek man wakes. He is growing so fast…today he figured out how to raise and lower the curtains in his room, and move the blackout drapes back and forth. Oh lordie.

Here he is Labor Day Weekend at the Oregon Coast Aquarium:

Derek with a brass turtle!

It never ends…

The busy Mondays!

Groceries, gotta go back to a store to return some things, drug store, gotta make beads for a customer (and if I run out of one type of glass in the process, gotta go get one more rod of it in Portland, tomorrow (my I do love living within 15 miles or so of Bullseye), swimming today.

Busy! Guess I will start with the glass and go from there.

Done by the heat of the day.

It’s supposed to get very warm today, and I have done all my “hot” tasks already, before 1 pm!

I made a bunch of strawberry jam today, using the pressure canner, from a flat of berries I bought at a farm a few miles away.  There are still plenty of berries left for ice cream, for DLJ’s smoothies, and snacking, and some to freeze for later in the year. The jars of jam are cooling now on the counter. I also put lasagna in the oven about 10 minutes ago, for dinner tonight and later in the week. The day gets warmest around here in the afternoon, so I am glad to have these things done before it starts really heating up. All that is left today is two short errands, and some writing. I will tackle the errands when the lasagna comes out, writing can be done after that.

Time is ticking down to the baby arriving! I am learning a lot from some books and friends, and am feeling confident…but also very aware I know so little. When this little guy starts getting smart, it’s going to be a lot of work, parenting, but I can also see how it can be very fulfilling to meet the challenges of not being manipulated and also helping the little guy have good confidence and self esteem. It’s going to be a bunch of trial and error, that is for sure!

Time to go lay down and take a break with a book, until the lasagna is done cooking. I am just so glad I got all the hot work done early today!

Another long day by myself…

DLJ is making another day-long trip to Bend, so he won’t be in chat to say hi a lot throughout the day.

Last night was our last birth class, and it was really fun, we had a potluck, and the guys surprised the girls with a foot massage in water. DLJ brought lots of rose petals from our garden and shared them with the guys so all of us pregnant moms-to-be could have rose scented water.

Our teacher is going to try to put together a get together for all of us at the end of summer so we can all see each other again after the babies are here. I hope that happens, you get to know the classmates and want to see how it all turned out for each of them!

I have a lot of beads to send out today, and then I sort of feel like running some errands in Portland proper, but I am not sure yet.

DLJ will be home too late for dinner, so I don’t have to cook tonight other than for myself. Something simple out of the freezer, as I have been spending the week emptying it of old leftovers to make room for frozen meals once the baby comes. One thing we learned last night was a way to make a food wheel to have friends help us with frozen meals. Between that and my mother, who plans to cook extra amounts of things when they arrive at the coast next week, we should have a good amount of easy to heat up food for those first weeks.

So….it’s 8 am. I could get some more sleep, but I think I will save that for a nap later. I guess I will do those errands today and get them out of the way, do some cleaning and get the beads in the mail. Not sure if I will torch today, if not, then definitely tomorrow.

I like my empty space…it’s strange to think it will be gone soon. But I know what fills it will be a wonderful thing indeed…but it’s still strange to think about.

Preggo Brain.

If the calendar says the massage appt. is at 1:30, don’t go at 11:30 and sit around waiting.

I got to read up on my magazines for a about 15 min till I realized my mistake…I will go back in an hour to get my massage at the correct time.

Tomorrow I am meeting up with a Mom’s group, but I need to call to get the address for the event I am going to. Really should do that right after this post so I know it gets done!

Tonight is birthing class night #4. I expect to be more informed, more anticipating, and more hit with the gravity of this huge event afterwards, like I am every week.

I have a bunch of beads to send out today. Tomorrow is packing for camping, buying the perishable ingredients, and making some beads that have been ordered. I don’t think I will get to them today. Camping! Our last trip, I think, other than maybe going to the coast, which we meant to do again before my parents arrived, but we probably won’t. Still, when the heat of summer arrives, if any of it coincides with a weekend and it’s not right around due date, a weekend at the ocean will be very nice, we are fortunate to have it to escape to.
I’ve been doing my pelvic stretches to help the little guy get into position, but it’s really hard to NOT sit in the way you aren’t supposed to in these weeks. No bucket seats, which means riding in cars is not a good thing. I do sit on the exercise ball downstairs when hanging out with DLJ, and my desk chair is set so my knees are lower than my hips…but there’s nothing much I can do about the car seats. I will just try to consolidate my errands even more than I already do.

Today is Ankimo’s 11th birthday. She’s a strange cat who doesn’t like meat, canned cat food, or treats, so there isn’t much I can do on her special day other than give her lots of love…so that is what I am doing. Pets are like infants…they don’t need tons of stuff…just love and attention. =)
After the massage I will pre-make dinner for after class, and make the fruit salad to bring with me as our snack during class. I will do my pain management practice and take a quick walk, hopefully…but all of that is a lot to cram in about 2 hours. Before I leave I should get those beads in the mail, so I must sign off for now.

I know, I have been. I have been busy. Mom came to visit, in-laws arrived the day before she left…

Things have been hectic but should slow down now.  It’s very warm today, a nice day to be not doing much of anything. DLJ took the day off to say goodbye to his parents, now they are gone and it’s too hot to do much until the cool of the evening sashays in.

Time to start making more beads, both for sale now and for inventory the first months with the kidlet around until I figure out how it’s all going to work. I just won’t know until I get there how I will arrange everything…so might as well play now with fire while I can with no one wanting anything from me. It’s almost third trimester time. I am feeling better about being Mom, not that I ever felt BADLY…I’m just adjusting. Less moments of ambivalence….but I do still lament how I am about to lose so much of my alone time, something I really enjoy.

Late start.

The phone rang really early this morning, and we didn’t get back to sleep until after DLJ’s alarm went off. So we slept after that.:P

He’s eating breakfast and it is nice to have him around a little later than usual. By the time the garbage truck comes around, he is usually gone.

Another busy day. I have got to get inventory listed today for my show next weekend at the Portland Convention Center, the Glass Guild Exhibition. This will probably be my last show for some time, at least until maybe next spring or summer (she said optimistically). I will still be making glass when I can once the baby arrives and things get vaguely in a routine…but the first year will definitely be a slowdown and more reliant on regular customers and online sales vs. shows. I do have some beads going without me to a large show in Vegas, so that will be some nice exposure even without my being there.

So far we are keeping up with the garden, but the rain hasn’t stopped yet, that is when it gets more difficult. Our hydrangeas are just not placed correctly (thank you, previous owners) and they burn most summers at some point. I  have been moving the rest of our soil into a holding area on the front yard until we get the yard removed. I also might work on getting part of the drip system in place, so that we can get it working without the timer, at least, by the time the rains stop for the summer.

Last night we had pork spareribs finished off on the grill, I had put them in a dry rub and roasted them for 1.5 hours before DLJ got home. It was our first time doing ribs, and I think they came out really well! It wasn’t Reo’s Ribs, for sure (a good rib place nearby), but it was pretty close and a lot less $$$. =)

This weekend we are going to Tacoma to a wedding reception of one of my oldest friends, from back in the Jersey Days. Old time readers might recognize the name Horticultural Guy. Peter. He got married on a Disney cruise in the past month and is having the party now for those of us who didn’t go on the cruise with him and his lovely wife. We are staying in a B&B the one night we are up there, so that should be a little treat. Any recs. on things to do in Tacoma on a Sunday morning/early afternoon, before we go back down to Portland?

Friday, \/\/00t!

I just cleaned the dishes, emptied the dishwasher, started to refill it, scrubbed the counters down and fed Anais. If I have time later today I will mop the floor in there.

Hopefully I will also sort the recycling and clean off the dining room table.

My roof now is covered in plywood and tar paper. Yesterday the old tile roof and the cedar shake below came down, Monday the new shingles will go up. The guys are supposed to come today to plop in a solatube in the guest bathroom, but they aren’t here yet.

I have a midwife n’ ultrasound appt. around 1 pm. I hope that all goes well and the news is good. This is, hopefully, my last ultrasound that I have.

It’s a cloudy but nice day today, so I will pack up some orders and hopefully also have time to get back in the studio this afternoon after the appointments. I also need to go to the store after the appointments and gather the goodies to make pad thai to take to a friend’s for dinner. I  have never made it myself, but I found a pretty good authentic recipe online that got good reviews, so I will give it a try. I am also going to try to get sticky rice from Uwajimaya to try once again to make coconut rice over the weekend, the chewy stuff you get as desert in Thai restaurants… I love it but never had the right kind of rice at home.

So it’s yet another busy day. I will also level off the soil in the veggie beds, now that they are full, take a photo of the leftover soil to see if a coworker of DLJ’s wants it, and take a walk, hopefully. That might be too much for one day.

One of my yellow onions has started to sprout. Any idea if it will make more onions if I plant it? I know garlic does not… you gotta get garlic specifically as seed garlic….

Administration day

Today seems to be all about cleaning house. I updated my chat lists, removing old folks I don’t talk to anymore. Made some modifications to my friends list on LiveJournal, did some housekeeping at the communities there that I am mod for. I will clean the real house as well today, and I think I will tackle the fridge as well. It’s raining today after two wonderful days of sun and nice weather, where I did a lot of walking, filling glass orders, and getting errands done.

Tomorrow I am going to the Recycled Gardens, which is a nusery type place the next town over. They are a volunteer organization, you can get plants there that have been removed from construction sites or donated to the company. Proceeds go towards spay/neuter programs for pets. I wrote earlier requesting information about volunteering with them, and tomorrow I am going over to see what they need and what I can do. I am looking forward to it as I have wanted a volunteer activity this year, since I work at home and am on my way to being a stay at home Mom, I want a way to contact and communicate and give back to the community since I have the luxury of time to do so. This also ties into my ever-stronger desire to be more simplistic, and involved in community rather than sitting at home watching TV(which I don’t really do, but I can easily be a hermit all week if I am not careful). If it really works out, it is an example I can set for my kid as well in the years to come.

I hope it is a good fit.

I want to walk to the store to get some ingredients to make raspberry chocolate chip cookies (I baked them in a dream a couple nights ago) for DLJ. The rain is rather light right now so with the Australian hat and raincoat, I might be able to make the daily walking trip!
