Lights in the rain

It’s another rainy Sunday here in Oregon. But we will probably put up the holiday lights anyway. Last night we went out to dinner at New Seasons, a local schmancy grocery store, and Derek saw his first holiday lights of the year. He was VERY excited, and kept saying “Who else in this neighborhood has their Christmas lights up?” and “Oh that is so PRETTY!” He is so sweet. I hope we can record him saying these things. Last year what he said was “Can we find more lights?” And the year before that….not much at all since he had very few words…

I am very busy. I am doing a lot of work on Thomas Dolby’s site right now, it is deep in crunch time on that one. And I just started working on a new site, another band called the Shanghai Woolies, a local band that plays hot jazz. And I have lots to do on the website for Derek’s preschool, as that is my volunteer parent job. And of course, the beads, the glass, the straws. Plus being a Mom and a wife. Busy! Very busy. I need things to settle down, but I am not sure when that will happen. The immediate crush should slow in a few days and not be so hectic.

I’m still in my pajamas. It’s been a nice, long week of DLJ being home. We were going to go to LA for Thanksgiving but it was canceled at the 11th hour, my MIL was very sick and didn’t want us to come. So we went to the coast instead. It was nice, we had two days that were cloudy, but also partly clear, with no rain, so Derek got some beach time in, we went to the Oregon Aquarium on Thanksgiving Day, which was a GREAT day to go. There were less than 200 people wandering the whole place, it was like it was rented out for a private party or something in terms of our freedom to roam around and see very few other people.

While life is very busy right now, I am grateful for the busy. It means I have work to do, art to do, ways to help friends with their work, and a great family to be a part of.

Art in the Round

I am doing at least one of the 3 Art in the Round shows in Beaverton, OR this year. They only have 8 or 10 vendors at each one.  They have live music and it is by a fountain and a really nice evening out in a very intimate atmosphere. I was hoping to get one later in the summer, more time to prepare. Of course, they want me at the first one, the last Tuesday in June. Yipe. I have a lot to do. I am almost out of earrings. I need to make a lot of earrings and a few more elaborate necklaces. I have plenty of bracelets, those things just don’t sell much. But I definitely need to make more earrings. I am really happy and excited to do the event. I love community events and this one is in such a nice location, with good restaurants, and the Mayor is even doing a walking tour from the library to the event with anyone who wants to join him! Yay for the Beaverton Arts Commission!

And more straws. I got some colored glass today. Soon I will have amber and lavender glass straws. Woo.

Derek is growing fast. He is so close to being potty trained. He poops on the potty all the time and if I leave him bare booty naked he pees on the potty most of the time with very few accidents.

He and I had a real water fight yesterday. He was throwing the water at me, and me back at him, and we were both in hysterical laughter. It was so much fun.

I am feeling much better about the only child thing. I was having very, very small doubts, but I know this is right for all 3 of us. We all win. What I have to do is to work hard on giving him plenty of opportunities to make friends, and work to get  him to know the family he has. We don’t have tons of cousins for him, but they exist. Extra effort needs to be made that he knows them, enjoys them, and considers them siblings as best he can. That is what I have with my cousin, who is also an only, and it has worked out great. It’s very important he has at least one person he can share his childhood history with.

First boro

Well, I got my new torch hooked up, running and messed with my little stash of boro glass that I have. This is my first pendant made with boro. I like it. Of course, I want more ooomph to work with, but thats a lot more $$$ to update my oxygen supply. Someday, but the new torch is a DREAM. After almost 5 years on the torch, I earned the upgrade!

My first work in boro.

Good things

Well, the kiln has no cure. But it can go onward as is as long as I can put up with it. When it goes south, it will go south quick, but is totally usable until then, as long as I ignore what temperature it SAYS it is. I think I found the right temp for my glass, so I can keep working with the kiln. It is in perfect condition, save for the control board. The brains. Yuck. But at least it’s not dead. I can use it and keep on keepin’ on.

My straws are selling very well. This is good. Practical item, not like jewelry. Which is also selling pretty well, even in this economy. I can’t complain.

I got a used drill press which will allow me to do a LOT more with metals in my work. Yay.

Today is Copper River Salmon day. Once a year we splurge on the really good stuff, both since it is so good, and also to support wild caught salmon as an industry vs. farmed. We buy wild whenver we can. So dinner tonight will be yummy. When Derek wakes we will walk to the store that has it, and he can have a cookie. Then back home and run around, I guess.

Tomorrow I get stitches out of my thumb. Yay. And I need to finish a large straw order, and take photos of the straw carrying cases, and make dinner, and…and…

it’s good to be busy.

This weekend, since the kiln issue is as resolved as it is going to be, I am going to set up my new torch. Finally. I am looking forward to that!

Iphone post

Trying out the wordpress app for my phone. Derek is napping after a fun morning with Elliot at a local cafe. Friends in town are stopping by soon. My kiln is still at a shop and I still don’t know what us wrong. Sucks with a show this weekend at a local cafe!
Ok, how to save and post this …

Dripping…

after a shower, sprawled out on the bed. It has been a lovely weekend, fabulous weather, lots of water, fun, popsicles and lounging around.

And the riding of scooters.

My kiln needed a part and we installed it, but it still has a heating issue. I have one more thing to try, then I just don’t know. I don’t want to buy a  new one, but I will if I have to. I need that kiln NOW for a show in a couple weeks. That’s the only bummer this weekend.

Ok, off to read some NewDream.org and relax. Derek is napping very late today…which is not the greatest, but it makes for a nice late afternoon siesta for Momma.

Also, Momma’s Morning Out alone yesterday was just fab. I have a new Alone Time place. I am definitely going back. Way better than Jade Sauna.

New Store Announcement: The Last Straw – Straws by Carli!

So I have been fiddling in the background and I have a new item to sell. I love my glass, and it’s pretty, and I will still do it. But several years ago I got a bunch of boro glass, which is a lot harder, stiffer, than the Bullseye I usually use. I didn’t have the airpower, firepower, etc., to use it. With the addition of a second oxygen concentrator, I finally could mess around with boro. But I don’t want to make the same things in boro that I do Bullseye. So I decided to be practical.

Reusable Glass Straws

Before you think I am totally strange, boro glass is Pyrex. These straws are very sturdy. Yes, they are glass, and like Pyrex cookware,  you drop it, it might break. But it is less likely to, and under normal usage, like Pyrex, it’s safe for use, for microwave and dishwashing.

Want to know more? I have a lifetime guarantee on my straws, if one ever breaks, tell me, and I will replace it. I also have a handy GLASS STRAW FAQ for you.

There’s more designs coming than just the designer Dot one. I am going to sell one off ones in special colors, and a set of four that I call elements, with a straw each representing earth, air, fire, and water. You can get those separately, of course.

Anyway. These are fun and a great departure for me from the “everyday” of my beads. They are really fun to drink out of, feel better than crappy plastic with who knows what in it, and are just a little touch of elegance and eco-friendliness in today’s world.

Sun/Rain

The sky doesn’t know what it wants today!

Quick glass porn post before Derek wakes!

I hope to be putting a lot of things on Etsy this week  while I wait for a part to arrive for my poor kiln!

Phew

Show is over. I should be unpacking the stuff in the garage to put away. But instead I had ice cream and now I am sitting here. Ha!

It was a really great show. I did very well, made a few contacts, have a few orders to check up on. I need to plant some sunflower seeds. I need more sleep. DLJ and Derek survived my being gone all weekend. Derek had the most trouble at nap time, missing Momma. It was hard on me, too, missing him more and more as each hour went by. But it was a successful show. I think I might treat myself to a new torch! We shall see.

Now, I can start selling on Etsy again, since I don’t need to really hoard inventory anymore. I have a small show at a bistro May 31, but that is about it for the near future in terms of needing a bunch of stuff at a particular location.
